Can you believe that just thirty years ago, fiber benefits were totally ignored by the medical community as being healthy? Found only in plants, fiber is a unique substance that is indigestible. That’s right, it passes through the digestive system completely unchanged! Today, there’s significant emphasis on the healthy aspects of fiber and it’s relationship to weight loss.

Fiber falls under the carbohydrate heading but is further classified as soluble and insoluble. Easily dissolved in water, soluble fiber is found in foods such as apples, beans, oats, and carrots. Soluble fiber can lower blood sugar levels as well as blood cholesterol levels.

Insoluble fiber, found in many vegetables, nuts, wheat bran, and whole-wheat flours, is an excellent laxative. It cannot be dissolved in water.

Typically, a good diet would include 25-35 grams of fiber each day. Women need less than men and younger women need slightly more than older women. Most Americans only get about half of the daily recommended amount of fiber in their diets.

Can you believe that Americans only eat about 10% of the fiber that was eaten 100 years ago? There are many reasons for this but the most significant one deals with the changes made in the processing of wheat over the last century.

Fiber is easily found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole-grain breads. The single best source is wheat bran. Fiber supplements, like Citrucel and Metamucil are useful, but some fiber benefits can only be utilized if consumed naturally.

It’s easy to add fiber to your diet and take advantage of the fiber benefits, but introduce it slowly and be sure to drink plenty of water. If you rapidly go from a low-fiber diet to a high-fiber diet, you may experience cramping or other gastrointestinal problems.

Because foods high in fiber tend to be lower in calories, they can be very healthy choices for someone trying to slim down.

You heart is the one thing that will help you lose weight and have a happier life. That old saying of “home is where the heart is” comes back to us. It comes back in both the poetic sense and the physical sense.

The ever-resent diet pill has been touted as something that makes weight loss possible without exercise. This is the biggest lie in advertising today. Without exercise, even in the smallest form, there can be no weight loss.

20 pounds is the average amount Americans desire to lose. Working out and dieting has not worked for these people. These people need exercise, eating right and a little self-control to get rid of those 20 pounds forever.

That average 20 pounds will not be lost with just eating right and moving around a bit more than usual. Increases in adrenaline and muscle movement and growth with cardio and aerobic exercises increase blood flow and oxygen flow. To lose weight, these are the only true things that will help.

Cardio exercises are those that are performed with the heightening of the heart rate in mind. The ideal heart rate for optimal exercise is 220 minus your age times 75%. An example would be, a person who is aged 40 would have an optimal heart rate of 135 beats per minute because: 220-40=180*.75=135.

While exercising it is difficult to check your heart rate. Multiplying the number you find by holding your wrist above your thumb and counting the beats for fifteen minutes by 4 is your heart rate. An easier way to do this is by buying a small device to do the counting for you.

There is another way to determine if you workout is right for you. If you can hold a conversation with a companion and you are not sweating, then you need to speed up the pace of your work out. If you cannot hold a conversation at all, then you need to tone down your work out.

Aerobic exercises are simply anything that gets your heart pumping and you are sweating. Some examples of aerobic exercise are gardening and cycling. You must be sweating by the time you are done with which ever form of exercise you have chosen.

Aerobic ideals are that a good work out is about 10-20 minutes a day. If you are looking to lose more than just slim down, then about 30-40 minutes is recommended. Working out every day for hours on end is not necessary to reach your goals.

With aerobic exercises, a person can lose that average 20 pounds quickly depending upon the amount of time spent exercising. It is wise to allow yourself, if you have not been active in the last couple of years, at least a year to lose that weight. Also, if there exists heart problems or another physical problem that may be effected by exercise, it is wise to take it easy at first.

A medical professional should be consulted before starting any new programs like exercise. Your medical professional will know exactly the amount of exercise that is good for you. This professional will also be able to give you a list, both cardio and aerobic, of exercises that will be most beneficial to your health.
