Leukemia Is The White Blood Cell Disease

INTRODUCTION: Leukemia means white blood. It is found in the bone marrow or blood and is characterized by an abnormal growth of blood cells, typically white blood cells (leukocytes)and is separated into its acute and chronic forms.

It affects the lungs, Kidneys, digestive tract or other parts of the body and can also collect in the testicles causing edema and swelling. It is one of the most common cancers among children, although it is not just a children′s disease, as many of us think.

It is diagnosed in about 29,000 adults and 2000 children each year in the US and has four primary types and many sub-types of which only a few of them are common in children.

Leukemia that has spread to the brain may produce central nervous system effects, such as headaches, seizures, weakness, blurred vision, balance difficulties, or vomiting and the disease, or the chemotherapy used to treat it, can cause anemia.

ACUTE LEUKEMIA: Leukemia in it’s acute form is characterized by the rapid increase of immature blood cells, and is potentially curable; However only a small number of patients are cured with todays therapy. It begins with one or a few white blood cells that have a lost or damaged DNA sequence and becomes worse quickly and may make you feel sick right away.

Leukemia tends to develop suddenly, however some chronic varieties may exist for years before they are even diagnosed. Immediate treatment is required due to the rapid growth and accumulation of the malignant cells, which then spill over into the blood stream and spread to other organs.

Whereas acute leukemia must be treated immediately, chronic forms are sometimes monitored for some time before treatment to ensure maximum effectiveness of therapy.

CHRONIC LEUKEMIA: Chronic leukemia is recognized by an excessive build up of relatively mature, but abnormal blood cells and can go undetected for many years until identified in a routine blood test. It is more common between the ages of 40 to 70 and rarely occurs among younger people.

It tends to worsen slowly and may not produce symptoms for many years. Like many cancers, it is a disease that usually occurs in the old. Doctors often find chronic leukemia during a regular or routine checkup, before there are any noticeable symptoms. The acute forms occur in those of all ages, whereas the chronic forms tend to occur in people over 40 years of age. Although slow-growing chronic leukemia can also be seen in children, but it is very rare, accounting for less than 50 cases in children each year in the USA.

TREATMENT: Treatment for leukemia is complex and it depends largely on your age and health, the type and how far it has metastasize or spread. Treatment is generally considered necessary when the patient shows signs and symptoms such as low blood cell numbers. Generally speaking, all treatment is divided into several different phases. In children, an intensive 6-month treatment program is needed after induction, followed by 2 years of chemotherapy.

For low risk children, standard treatment usually consists of 3 drugs (prednisone, L-asparaginase, and vincristine) for the first month of treatment. Higher risk patients receive higher drug doses plus treatment with extra chemotherapy drugs. Follow up treatment for all patients usually consists of supportive care, such as intravenous nutrition and treatment with antibiotics taken orally.

In general, the indications for treatment are: dropping hemoglobin or platelet count, progression to advance or later stages of disease, painful, disease related over growth of lymph nodes or spleen, lymphocyte doubling time (an indicator of lymphocyte reproduction) of less than a year. Overall, the strategy is to control bone marrow and systemic or total body disease while offering specific treatment for the central nervous system (CNS), if necessary. Maintenance treatments may be given to prevent disease re-ocurrence once remission has been accomplished. Whatever the plan or strategy, it is important for the patient to understand the treatment that is being given and the reasons behind the selection.

CONCLUSION: Leukemia is a cancer of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. These cells crowd out other types of blood cells produced by the bone marrow, including red blood cells, which carry oxygen to tissues throughout your body, and platelets, which help form blood clots.

Leukemia cells can spread to the lymph nodes or other organs causing swelling and/or pain and can also collect in the kidney, liver and spleen, causing enlargement of these organs. They also can affect the lungs and other parts of the body. Acute forms can occur in children and young adults. Chronic forms mostly occurs in older people, but can theoretically occur in any age group.

To date there is no single known cause for all of the different types of leukemia. Studies have linked exposure to chemicals, such as benzene, and hair dyes to the development of some forms of the disease. Viruses have been linked to other forms. Until the cause or causes are discovered, there is no known way to prevent the occurrence of Leukemia. As of 1998, it is estimated that each year, approximately 30,800 individuals will be diagnosed with Leukemia in the United States and 21,700 persons will die of the disease.

Cancer - The Most Frightful of Diseases

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is a collection of over 100 different diseases that are cause by abnormal growth of body cells. It is one of the key diseases that is a “golden eggs laying goose″ for Orthodox medicine. Cancer is usually classified according to the tissue from which the cancerous cells originated, as well as the normal cell type they look like or resemble.

CHILDHOOD CANCERS: Amongst all age categories, the most common child cancers are leukemia, lymphoma, and brain cancer. In nearly all cases, however, childhood cancers arise from non-inherited changes in the genes of growing cells. Longer term effects can include infertility, growth problems, organ damage, or increased risk of other malignancies.

The diagnosis and treatment of cancers in children requires time, and there are both short and long term side effects.

WOMAN: Many women with inflammatory breast cancer do not have an associated breast lump, which can make the disease more difficult to detect. Another challenge is that inflammatory breast cancer is a much more aggressive cancer in younger women than other types of breast cancer.

Yet, some benign breast conditions are important because women with these factors have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Not all women with lymph node involvement neccesarily develop metastases, and it is not unusual for a woman to have negative lymph nodes and later develop metastases.

TREATMENTS: Different types of cancer have different signs, symptoms, treatments, and outcomes, depending on the cell type involved and the degree of uncontrolled cell growth.

Every child’s treatment varies, so a child may get daily, weekly, or monthly drug treatments. Radiation is one of the most common treatments for cancer. While surgery is often all that is neccesary, these kinds of cancers may not respond as well to some other treatments used for invasive ductal or lobular breast cancer.

As research continues to develop, treatments are becoming more specific to different types of cancer. Also, histologic grading and the presence of specific molecular markers can also be useful for prognosis, as well as in determining individual treatments. Many experimental cancer treatments are also under development.

CONCLUSION: Cancer is not caused by micro-organism, like colds or the flu are. Cancer is a term for diseases in which cells divide abnormally without control and can invade other tissues.

Although the control of the symptoms of cancer is not usually thought of as a treatment for cancer, it is important in determining the quality of life of cancer patients, and plays an important role in the decision as to whether the patient is able to undergo other treatments. Once diagnosed, it is usually treated with a combination of surgery, drugs and radiotherapy. The cure and cause of cancer is within us.

Pilates is not only a work out method it is a way to control your mind, body and spirit. The use of focused breathing and attention paid to the muscle groups builds the ability to focus the mind away from problems. Many people find themselves ill due to stress and lack of exercise. Pilates answers both of these problems.

The Pilates exercise regimen unites your body and mind and also gives you discipline. All these will have positive benefits to your health and well being. Stress brings many chemical changes to your body. It increases blood flow to the larger muscles and slows digestion as it prepares the body for “fight or flight” mode. Your blood vessels restrict and sugar rises. Many hormones are switched into off position. If this were primitive times and there was real danger than this would be a good thing. However much of todays stress has more to do with day to day living such as problems at work or debt piling up.

Stress related diseases send people to the doctor. Estimates of seventy-five to ninety percent of all visits are stress related. It slows healing and most of all prevents wellness. Wellness is not the opposite of illness. It is more than just the lack of sickness; it is an overall well-being that affects both the mental and the physical aspects of life. Many adverse habits develop because of stress and lack of wellness.

The use of focus in Pilates develops the mind to a point that it stops the cycle of worry and stress. Much like any mental exercise that allows the individual more control of thought patterns, Pilates offers a way to change your focus and relieve the stress.

The exercise from Pilates releases the body from the flight or fight mode by mimicking the activity of both. Exercise is a proven method of stress control, when combined with the activity of mental control and focus on breathing, the quick return of stress is unlikely and the cycle is broken for that period.

It is no surprise that studies link a reduction of disease with exercise. A study at the University of Calgary and the University of Ottowa showed a decrease in blood sugar when patients with type two diabetics exercised. The decrease translated into a reduction of heart attack and diabetic kidney and eye disease. Other studies show a reduction of 40 percent in mortality rate for diabetics. Being overweight and lack of activity are the biggest risk factors for heart disease. Pilates reduces both risks and is a heart healthy activity. Stress is also linked to tumor growth in cancer victims. While there is no study that shows psychological stress creates cancer, there are many that shows it impairs the immune system and creates an environment conducive to cancer.

It seems pretty simple. Take a Pilates course, work out three times a week, live not only longer but also better. The activity is good for the body, the training is good for the soul and the results on appearance are fantastic for the spirit. Devote a small portion of time to exercise and regain hours in healthy stress-free living. You’ll find that the day’s stresses melt away and you feel better than you ever felt before, after just a few months of training.
