They say that health is wealth. It’s a very true statement. Most people would give all their wealth for good health. Some take health for granted - until something goes wrong and then they regret past excesses or lack of attention to diet and exercise.

When we are young we don’t give health a second thought. Looking after ourselves is something we don’t worry about. We live life to the full. It’s only when something goes wrong that we are brought up short and forced to think about the way we behave as far as our health is concerned.

Diet is somebody else’s concern when we are young, we don’t worry ourselves about it. All we are interested in is getting more of what we like - which is usually candy, cake and cookies washed down with copious quantities of cola.

Only when we reach our teenage years do we take more note of the way we look. Now we notice if we’re fatter than our friends. It starts to matter.

Eating the right food when we are children is vitally important. We don’t normally have too much say in what we eat, but children do try and intimidate their parents into giving them things they want. Sometimes this can result in a very distorted diet - a bad diet.

Arriving in early adulthood overweight is not helpful. To have so many ingrained bad habits as far as eating and exercise is concerned makes doing something about it difficult - although not impossible.

The only real way of attacking the problem is to develop an awareness of what caused the overweight state in the first place. In a young person this can be difficult as much of the problem was probably laid down when they were being brought up. Recognising where the fault lies can be complicated.

Change can be made easier by not going against the norm, but by learning new habits - slim habits, if you like. New habits will enable change to take place without having to directly confront the past.

Your goal should then be to cut back 500 calories a day to lose one pound in one week. The healthiest way to do this would be to divide up your daily calorie deficit between your diet and exercise. Just remember the fact that you have gained weight gradually so you will have to lose it gradually as well.

The main reason that you should divide up your calorie loss is because it will be much easier on you and healthier for your body. Plus, it is the only way to get rid of your cellulite. Dividing up the calorie deficit will be easier on you because you will only be cutting back a little on food and thus will not be left feeling hungry. Hunger is the main cause for most diet failures, so avoiding hunger can be critical to your weight loss success. If you want to lose weight and get rid of your cellulite faster, you can increase your daily calorie loss to 1000 calories, 500 from eating less and 500 from exercise. Cutting back more than this is not advised as it can cause health problems.

Let’s say you do not want to exercise because it is just too much work so you choose to lose 2 pounds a week by strictly dieting. This means you will need to cut back on 1000 calories per day in order to meet your goal. Do you know what will become of your cellulite? It will actually look worse. When you diet to lose weight strictly through cutting back on food, you will not lose the fat but rather you will lose your muscle. When this happens your muscles will shrink, your fat cells will remain the same, you will see your skin sagging instead of your skin tightening and thus the cellulite appears. So losing weight through diet alone will only make matters worse and make your cellulite stand out that much more.

Having your cellulite stand out is definitely not the goal of your weight loss plan. You chose to go on a diet to rid cellulite from your body. What you got was exactly the opposite. What you should do instead is start an exercise routine that will help burn away your fat. You should aim at increasing your metabolism to 8% to 25% above your normal rate. This can be accomplished with a cardio workout.

A cardio workout is a moderately strenuous routine that gets your heart pumping. It requires that you use your large muscle groups in a steady manner. When you heart starts pumping fast, it increases your metabolism which requires a tremendous amount of energy from your body so it can keep up the pace. In order to provide your body the energy it needs, it will take it from your stored fatty tissues. As your fat decreases, so will your cellulite. Some good cardio workouts you can use to make this happen are swimming, aerobics, tae-bo, cycling, running, jogging and walking.

There are many ways you can help your loved one get dressed. Start by throwing away any clothes in the closet or dresser that he or she won’t ever wear. This can eliminate a lot of confusion in choosing what to wear. So that your loved one can stay independent, don’t choose exactly what they will wear each day. Instead, lay out a few outfit choices and let them make the decision for themselves.

If you find that your loved one likes to wear the same outfit each day, buy two or three duplicates of each article so that they wear clean clothes instead of ones they′ve worn earlier in the week.

On top of being overwhelmed by choices, Alzheimer’s patients often forget how to get dressed or where each article of clothing should go. Give them one piece of clothing at a time with specific instructions as to what they should do with it to prevent confusion. Do not ask them to just “get dressed” because they might not know what this implies.

For example, hand them their pants and ask them to put them on, repeating the same procedure with the rest of their outfit. Make sure they have comfortable, non-slip shoes and replace buttons, zippers and snaps with Velcro, which can be a lot easier for your loved one to handle.

Other grooming tasks, like managing hair, shaving and brushing teeth, are often forgotten about by Alzheimer’s patients. On top of forgetting how to do these things, they may just forget that they need to do them at all.

To encourage daily grooming, buy your loved ones favorite products so the activities are more enjoyable for them. Spend time with your loved one and get ready together so you can show them first hand how to do things and they can watch and mimic your activity.

Nail clippers, razors and other dangerous grooming items should be replaced to prevent injury. Invest in safer options, like emery boards and electric shavers. Going out in to public can be frightening for an Alzheimer’s patient, so see if your hair dresser or barber makes house calls. This way your loved one can have their hair cut, colored or permed in the comfort of their own home. Hygiene and safety are important but so isn’t independence. Do whatever you can to ensure your loved one has dignity as well as pride in his or her appearance.
