If you are considering weight loss surgery, Lap Band surgery may be an option for you. There are many reputable Lap Band clinics in Toronto, but before you make an appointment, make sure to do your research. Below are a few things to consider if you are thinking about undergoing Lap Band surgery for weight loss.

Cost

Lap Band surgery in Toronto and other parts of Canada can be very costly. You’ll have to research the different Lap Band clinics to find out specific information related to cost. In many cases, medical insurance will not cover the cost of bariatric surgery. Consider whether you’re willing to finance your own surgery through loans or credit cards should it be necessary.

Eligibility

Many different factors are considered by doctors in determining whether you are eligible for Lap Band surgery or not. In order to qualify for surgery, you must be between the ages of 18 and 55, and at least 100 pounds overweight. Alternatively, you may have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of between 35 and 40 or (or a BMI of 35 with significant co′morbidity). You must be in reasonably good health and you must report any current or past medical problems. Patients with severe and permanent medical conditions are considered ineligible for bariatric surgery.

In order to determine if you are a candidate for Lap Band surgery several exams are required prior to scheduling surgery. Required tests include: EKG, Upper G.I. Series, Gallbladder Ultrasound, Chest X-Ray, Blood & Urine Analysis.

Risks

As with any type of major surgery, there are general risks associated with undergoing a major procedure. These risks can be worse for overweight patients. Most of the common complications associated with lap band surgery will take place after the surgery. Most patients will experience one type of complication or other in the weeks and months following lap band surgery.

Common Complications

- Nausea & Vomiting: 50% of patients - Regurgitation/Gastro Esophageal reflux: 1/3 of patients - Slippage of the band: 1/4 of patients - Blockage in the passage between the two sections of the stomach: 1 in 7 pages - Difficulty in swallowing (dysphasia), constipation and diarrhea

More Serious Complications

- Erosion of the band into the stomach - Twisting or leakage of the access port

Rare Complications

- Inflammation of the stomach (gastritis) - less than 1% - Migration of the stomach above the diaphragm (hiatal hernia) - Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) - Dehydration - Abdominal pain - Gas/flatulence - Chest pain - Infection

Commitment

Though the surgery can technically be reversed by removing the Lap Band, you must remember that Lap Band surgery is considered a life-long commitment that is intended to help keep the weight off. With that being said, living with the lap band will require a total lifestyle change. Some of the changes you can expect include the following:

- You’ll have to learn new eating habits. While you are learning these new eating habits you can expect vomiting to occur.

- For up to three days following surgery, you will only be allowed to consume clear liquids in small amounts.

- Solid foods will be allowed only after clear liquids and soft foods are kept down.

- Progression to solid foods is slow and varies from one patient to another. Initially, one starts with 8 teaspoons of food, which must be eaten slowly. You must stop eating as soon as you start to feel full or you may vomit.

Average Weight Loss

It is difficult to estimate how much weight you will lose monthly or annually following Lap Band surgery, especially since results vary for everyone depending on your age, height, metabolism, level of activity, etcetera. However, patients who follow the new eating patterns carefully and exercise daily can hope to lose more than 30 kilos (or 65 pounds) in the first year.

Conclusion

If after considering all these factors you still think Lap Band surgery may be for you, the next step is to talk to a doctor about your situation. Research Lap Band clinics in Toronto and make an appointment to discuss surgery with a specialist.

Match bicycle clothing, protective gear to style of riding and the terrain for enjoyable and successful riding.

Individual Choice In Biking Gear

While mountain bikers, road riders and others face different situations in their specific type of riding, there are similarities as well. Whether a mountain biker rides on the roughest, rockiest terrain or the smoothest paved bike paths in a state park, certain items of bicycle clothing, bike helmets and accessories are essential.

Each individual will make a choice as to the type of gear, color and exterior design, etc. usually based on the amount of money allotted for the sport. Some mountain bike riders who pedal only the sturdiest, heavily built bike over rough ground will take along spare bicycle parts. Others who ride on paved paths won’t need to give so much attention to breakdowns and repairs.

All riders, in any type of biking, should have a couple of good biking helmets, in addition to quality bicycle clothing, gloves, heart monitors, timers etc. Serious bike racers and those who tackle the most challenging mountain trails will probably need pads for the knees and elbows in addition to the best helmet that will fit the budget. Good equipment designed especially for safety and protection may be the difference between finishing the course and looking for assistance shortly after the start of the session.

Some mountain bike events and some road events require the rider to be active after the sun goes down. So the biker may need to invest in a helmet light, a bike light and so on. Tail lighting on the bike is also a must for these special events. It would be wise to discuss lighting and other safety options with an expert at the bike shop to make sure all the options are clear.

Quality Bike: The Cost Of Extras

Some who take on the roughest mountain bike terrain invest in heavy-duty bike wheels and tires, in addition to purchasing a bike with a very durable frame. Bent rims and a broken weld on the frame will stop a biker more quickly than almost anything else that can happen on the trail. It will probably be a good idea to take along a couple of extra durable, knobby tires for those trips over the roughest ground.

Tip: Some mountain bikers have started to insist on protective end caps for the handlebars, to protect the rider from injury during a fall. These items are most often found on straight or slightly curved bars, and are not usually a priority on the more gently curved racing bars. Only when all the proper equipment is in place should a mountain biker head to the open spaces.

Winter weather is quickly approaching. Being fashionable in this season means sporting classic winter coats. The pea coat is a classic, that is both traditional and always alluring.

Like many lasting men’s fashion components, the pea coat’s history is rooted in the military arena. Since the 1700’s, overcoats similar in nature to the modern pea coat have been worn by sailors of European and American navies. To this day, the pea coat is standard issue for the brave men and women of the U.S. Navy.

Because the classic pea coat continues to be fashionable and stylish, multiple variations are sold by many retailers in North America. As well, being a military issue garment, many pea coats can be picked up at army surplus stores for very reasonable prices. If you would like to purchase a more elegant pea coat, many top designers offer their own versions of this stylish and functional cold-weather coat.

Despite where you purchase your coat, you should not buy a style that differs too much from the classic military original. Here’s what you ought to keep an eye out for when you buy a pea coat:

* Great quality pea coats are composed of durable and warming wool fabric, so do not elect to purchase any manner of pea coat that isn’t primarily made from quality wool for its external layer.

* Wide lapels, large buttons, and vertical or slash pockets are notable characteristics of classic pea coats.

* Your coat should definitely fit you! Because of it’s bulky construction and thick fabric a pea coat can seem over-sized for a guy with a wiry frame. If you have a slender build, take your coat to your local alterations shop and have them alter it to be more fitting to your shape.

A well maintained pea coat is a useful wardrobe piece because it can be worn with both dressy and dressed down looks. Throw on a colorful scarf, red or white will do, with your pea coat and you are set to impress this winter season.
