There is controversy over the very existence of photographic memory. Photographic memory has been confused with eidetic memory even by experts. It may be because of the misnomer of photographic memory but some researchers think that someone that can remember small details are staying they can recall all events for over three minutes.

The test for eidetic memory is also used to test photographic memory. In this test, a person is given thirty seconds to look at an image, which is then removed. After this, the person looking at the image tries to recreate it in their mind, and tells the researcher what they saw.

Few people have been able to repeat this image with clear detail, and the image fades over time. after a few minutes, no one has been able to offer much more than a rough outline of the image. It’s this sort of test that’s used as the basis for the claim that there’s no such thing as photographic memory.

Despite the conclusions drawn by these experts, there are numerous people who have demonstrated that photographic memory is very real and very possible. The basic theory is that people have enhanced memory capabilities enabling them to remember things longer that most, instead of actually taking a picture with their brain.

Memory Traits Can Be Expanded

Children usually recall things with vivid detail. This is where the idea of photographic memory is usually coming from. When they get older outside influences disrupt the memory process. Older memories are replaced with new memories.

It’s thought that one of the reasons adults are less likely to store these details is because there are so many interruptions in our daily lives. We can effectively collect enough detail in our mind’s eyes to store it into memory.

Numerous resources are available to help individuals to capitalize on memory skills. They can train themselves to have a virtual photographic memory. For years there have been memory courses to allow people to recall important information like names and dates. This is done by training what is sometimes called photographic memory.

The ability to recall an image in detail after only seeing it once is eidetic memory. Those claiming to have it are rare while those that believe to have photographic memory can remember information in detail as though looking at it. The information they are trying to recall is believed to form an image due to the expanded memory capabilities.
