I am still amazed at the number of people trying to lose the belly fat that has plagued them for years. With people spending several billion dollars in the weight loss industry every year you would have thought that this problem would have been solved. The science is around to enable us to lose up to 5lbs a week in a healthy way.

In all honesty, it wasn’t that long ago that I too, was in search of the perfect solution. An overnight remedy for success is every fat persons dream but in reality, it just doesn’t work that way.

While on my quest to get lean, I came to notice a few points which I feel are stumbling blocks for so many others on a similar quest. Firstly, radical diets are just plain wrong and in many cases, even dangerous. Secondly, most of the much touted exercise programs offer little true benefits because they either do nothing at all, or they require such an enormous effort that the average fatty won’t bother.

Finally someone told me about interval training and what they told me, changed my life. Why? Simply because there is no other form of exercise comparable to interval training when it comes to shedding fat. In fact, unlike steady state cardio which causes your body to burn fat for thirty minutes, a single interval training session will have your body burning fat for up to forty hours and if that’s not impressive, then I don’t know what is.

There’s been a lot of research on this. The study that started all of this off came from Tremblay. Two groups of volunteers were put on different exercise routines. One on interval training, the other on steady state endurance training. It initially appeared that endurance training was going to be more effective as they used up twice as many calories than the high intensity group. But when the results came out, the interval trainers had lost nine times more subcutaneous fat than the endurance athletes.

What impressed researchers even more, was the fact that the interval training had actually altered the participants’ metabolisms in a permanent way. In other words, even after the study had been completed, their bodies remained more efficient at burning fat.

That study was done in 1994 and since then there have been enormous strides in making this method of fat loss even more effective. Result can vary depending how fit you are and how intensely you can exercise but they can range from about 2 pounds a week for a beginner workout doing the minimum of twenty minutes exercise, three times a week to up to 5 pounds a week on the more intense programs.

Of course it’s no secret that interval training is intense, hence the importance of easing into it gradually if you are unfit to start of with. No matter what arguments are made, interval training is backed by science and has proven to be the most effective exercise in the world if you want to loose the belly fat.
