Do you dislike the way you look now? Are you feeling uneasy about yourself and therefore find yourself avoiding relationships with members of the opposite sex? If so, there is good news. You can make a shift in your life and adjust your habits so that you will have a body you can finally be proud of. The best thing about it for you is that if you decide to day to take action on these simple solutions, you’ll see real results even before President Elect Obama takes office. Wouldn’t that be cool, a new president and a new and improved you.

For you step one is to simply get you up and out of that sedentary lifestyle. The key is to get your metabolism going as quickly as possible. To do this, wake up just 10 minutes early and take a brisk walk around your home two to three times.

Step two is for you to do what your mother always told you. Eat your breakfast. After much research, most doctors agree that breakfast really is the most important way to start your day. By eating breakfast, you give your body permission to begin to burn those calories. This means that all morning long, your body is working to process those nutrients so that you’ll have additional energy from the start all the way to the end of the day.

You need to take a serious look at what you are putting into your body for fuel. Candy and soda may have the sugar in it for a quick jump-start, but it does not have the lasting nutrients that you need for energy. Make sure that you are enjoying a balanced diet that has lots of fruits and vegetables in it. These are lower in calories, but help your stomach to stay full.

You must also hydrate yourself, and that means drinking lots and lots of water. Water is really something that keeps your body in top operating condition. A trick is that if you are drinking any caffeinated free beverage then you can count that as water in your day.

Here’s a simple secret for you. For weight loss to be effective, you must loose more pounds than you gain. Yes, I know you would’ve sat in the cold on a stormy winter morning for that tidbit of information. While it sounds simple, it is actually very profound. By controlling your portions and monitoring your caloric intake, you can assure yourself that you are burning more calories and fat than you are adding to your waistline.

The power of snacking is next on your agenda. It may sound crazy but the more times you eat, the better job your body will do at burning up those calories throughout the day. Your snacks don’t have to be anything elaborate. In fact, I know of someone who brings to work a small back of dry Cheerios to snack on throughout the day.

Keep a diary of everything you eat. I would also encourage you to document the time of day in which you eat as well. You will likely find an interesting pattern. The key though is that you can not correct what you do not know exists. This daily eating diary will serve a starting point from where you will grow.

Last but not least is the motivation factor. While eating the right foods at the right times and exercising are all very important things, none of those things are possible without proper motivation and support. Forget trying to do it on your own. If you could have done it, you would have by now. The best thing to do is to find a running buddy. Someone whom you can confide in and someone you can trust that will not let you give up. You two can support one another as you press forward toward creating the body you deserve by inauguration day.

Yoga for Your Body and Mind

Yoga is all the rage these days, and indeed, it has many benefits. It has a low incidence of injury, reduces stress and tension, and increases muscle strength. Best of all, perhaps, it doesn′t look like exercise. Why don′t more people practice simple yoga, then?

People think of yoga as being passive and mystical - an otherworldly activity that doesn’t relate to their lives. People are experiencing a vacuum because of all the outward directed activity, and they are going to have to go back to the experience of self.

In fact, yoga is an Indian discipline that has been practiced for more than 5000 years. Yet, here, it still boasts few followers. Almost half of the American adult population swims, while about 25% run or jog, but only 2% practice yoga.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit “yuj,” which means to yoke or connect. With yoga’s various techniques, you can achieve mental and physical equilibrium, inner peace, and improved health. Indeed, yoga is commonly said to provide not just a workout, but a “work-in”.

There are approximately eight main branches of yoga, each having several variations. Basically, however, only two are about exercise. Those are kundalini yoga and hatha yoga.

Hatha yoga is most properly practiced in the Western world. Slow paced, it emphasizes control breathing and has practitioners assume a variety of physical poses. Proponents say that it helps the vital organs, glands, and nervous system.

Kundalini yoga, introduced to this country in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan, is more active than hatha yoga, and combines various movements, modes of breathing, and meditation. With kundalini yoga, the idea is that body energy is coiled below the base of the spine and this energy can be tapped so that it will travel upward through the different chakras or energy centers until it reaches the top of the head. When one arrives here, it is said that you have reached your fullest potential.

Classically, there are 84 basic yoga positions, or asanas, which are coordinated with special breathing techniques. The asanas range from simple bends and twists to pretzel-like contortions reserved for the most advanced practitioners. The various poses elongate the muscles and build flexibility. Along with the proper breathing, they help rid the body of tension. Static holds isolate and strengthen particular muscles.

Asanas have evolved over the centuries so that they now exercise every nerve, muscle and gland in the body. They can give you a fine and toned physique that is elastic and not musclebound, but strong. In addition, these asanas can help keep the body well and free of disease. Asanas can also help soothe the nerves and reduce fatigue. However, perhaps their real importance comes from the way they discipline and train one’s mind.

Are the Elderly Prone to Insomnia?

My phone sometimes rings at strange hours, and usually it will be an older relative. One I would have assumed should either have gone to bed or should still be sleeping.

I certainly raised my curiosity as this did not used to occur.

Most people will experience some form of insomnia. They will have problems falling asleep or remaining asleep. Some though experience long term insomnia which can and does have other health implications.

The older we get, the more likely we are to succumb to insomnia. Our sleep patterns change and the elderly tend to experience a less deep sleep than younger people.

In addition, other age related disorders (cognitive or dementia) as well as additional pain can lead to the inability to sleep well.

The body’s natural sleep cycle can also be thrown off due to too many naps during the day.

Many older people also believe they simply do not need as much sleep as younger folks. This is not true. Overall, adults require an average of 8 hours of sleep per night. A good indicator of not getting enough sleep is if you wake not feeling rested.

Many patients neglect to inform their health care provider of insomnia, or doctors do not inquire. When the subject is discussed, the result is normally a prescription for some sort of sleeping aid.

But there is no drug approved for chronic insomnia. If the drugs intended for short term use are instead used long term, the very problems people are trying to avoid can show up (memory loss, drowsiness, dizziness.)

Eat a healthy diet and avoid caffeine and sugar close to bed time. Both of these can affect sleep patterns.

Avoid alcohol consumption as the REM cycle is disrupted.

Exercise, especially in the outdoors in direct sunlight can make a big difference in getting and staying asleep.

Naps are actually good, but make sure they are limited to 20 minutes or so per day.

I am also excited to be releasing my Insomnia Program. This is all natural and has shown amazing results. Stay tuned to this blog for updates.
