Fitness in Baby Steps
One of the fatal mistakes that many people make when theyre deciding to get into shape is to tackle the entire concept of fitness at one time. Incorporating fitness into your life takes time and wont happen overnight. Your body, mind, and spirit need time to adjust to the many changes that will be happening as you start to add exercise to your daily routine. This is why fitness in small steps is so important and will ensure that youre less likely to quit when you become overwhelmed with the changes in your life.
If this is the first time in months or years that you are deciding to get active, then first get moving and add walking every day. It takes walking for at least 30 minutes a day in order to see changes in your fitness level. Once you have been walking for a while and are starting to see the effects of the program you can make changes in your fitness regime, join a gym, take up power walking or try hiking with friends.
A good way to measure progress is to invest in a pedometer. You should be aiming towards 10,000 steps a day. But to do this you will also need to invest in a good pair of walking shoes, comfort is important. Sore feet will certainly lessen any desire to get fit using any form of exercise, not just walking.
It is important not to try to do too much at first because you risk injuring yourself if you push your body farther than it is ready to go. Do the same walking routine every day for the first couple of weeks. We are trying to do 30 minutes of walking a day, but you may need to work up to this gradually. After you have a walking regime set for two weeks then gradually add a little more time. Only do what you are comfortable doing, this way you will be motivated to continue.
Besides your daily walking routine you can find any and all ways to get moving. This means taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking your car around the corner from your destination and walking a block or two, and leaving your car at home whenever you can. Your goal for fitness is to get moving and to keep moving.
After a couple months of taking the above small steps towards fitness youll start to see a significant change in your fitness level. Youll find that you feel better, have more energy, are sleeping more soundly, and feel better about yourself.
