A Few Healthy Heart Tips

The temperature’s in the 70’s right now, which is right around what native Floridians call “cool weather”. Of course this would be a monstrous heat wave in Long Island, where I’ve spent most of my life.

A chef friend of mine once said to me, “If you want heat, work in a kitchen. If you really want heat, work in a really busy kitchen.”

I had the fun experience of walking by a broiler one day and I can assure you my friend wasn′t kidding. That broiler in particular ran at 850 degrees. Great for steak, not so much for people working within ten feet.

Moving along to medicine, here are your healthy heart tips for the day.

1. Heart attacks don′t just happen when you’re 65 or older - not that I’m considering that to be old, lately. In fact the demographic is getting younger and younger. Women aren′t safe either - breast cancer has now taken second place to heart disease for the most common cause of death.

2. Nutrition is very important. That whole “eat the rainbow” thing is actually good advice. Vegetables and fruits come in lots of different colors. Brighter colors mean more anti-oxidants.

3. For men, varying degrees of impotence (or “E.D.” as they call it today) past age 35 are often a sign of artery blockages, and should be checked out immediately. And don′t just settle for an annual physical. See a cardiologist, and get your heart tested. The earlier you start making changes the better off you’re going to be.

One of the greatest things you can do for your heart is to start taking pharmaceutical grade fish oil. There are even some signs that doctors here and there are starting to get the message.

Doctors are now being advised by The National Institute For Health and Clinical Excellence to give fish oil to patients that have had heart attacks.

I completely agree with that, but it’s useless for preventing cardiac events.

Enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil can be taken by almost anyone at any age, and the benefits are numerous. A story in this morning’s newspaper told the story of a professional baseball player who is returning to play much earlier than expected. The reason? Fish oil healed his aching joints much faster than he expected.

In the Institute study I mentioned earlier, omega-3 fatty acids cut the incidence of recurring sudden death by heart attack 45%.

Which is why I don′t wait to recommend fish oil. I always say, start now.
