Have a look in anyones bureau (try when they’re not looking) and lo and behold: a T-shirt. And typically, theres more than one. Theyre unstoppable and totally comfortable. Do you think by totally comfortable I mean totally or absolutely? Its a semantic game, to be sure, but as a purveyor of all things comfortable, I like to use all-encompassing and ridiculous words. By way of disclosure, I should say: I am an avid T-shirt collector and, on occasion, I do wear them. A lot.

Now, it should be said, by me (who else) that I engage in both in histrionics and history. With regards to the latter, Id like to dabble with the history of the mighty, mighty T-shirt. Brace yourself. Originally, this symbol of masculine prowess and the prompter of countless gun show shtick, was an Englishmans best line of defense in the war against that most improper of human functions: sweating. Yes, the T-shirt started as a pit stop. Now, mind you were talking about sometime in the 1880s. Very Victorian, no? But of course they didnt call it a T-shirt, opting for the terribly proper: under-vest. By Jove!

The popularly bandied about theory is that during WW2, the English introduced the under-vest to their American counter-parts, who, in turn, brought their under-vests home. I think this is questionable as I can wear Ive seen old movies with Clark Gable in a muscle T, washing his face or something. Anyone? Well, so the story goes the English gave us the T-shirt and we adopted the military designation for the shirt, which was training shirt. Get it? Training shirt became t-shirt. Im not buying it.

Our GIs brought the Ts home and wore them without the fuss and bother of a button down or coat. Living on the edge, eh? Remember, were talking about the age of Brylcreem here. So, of course, what does every ad man dream of? Millions of miniature, walking billboards waiting to be emblazoned with a slogan. In fact, in the 48 election, both the Republicans and Democrats printed T-shirts with such winning slogans as “Dew it for Dewey and “I Like Ike.” I do like Ike.

Presto-magic: graphic Tees are born! Plain white T-shirts? Why? Slap something on it: pictures, slogans, cartoon characters, hand-written passages from Thus Spoke Zarathustra. O man, take care! What does the deep midnight declare? I was asleep″ Anyone? Anyone? Anyway, follow the next fad to the T of your dreams and wear it with a stiff upper lip.

The Glorious Garment

And now a question for the cool ages: can a T-shirt by any other name still smell as sweet? Am I odd? Am I obsessed, to a fault, with comfort? Have I gone off the deep end with my single-minded, heated obsession with the glorious, humble T-shirt? Perhaps. I have a problem, I can admit that. But if you grew up watching James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Monty Clift slouching about, screaming in the rain, and looking fragile, youd have a fixed obsession with this piece of clothing too.

In the entirety of human history, by which I mean the last 60 years, there are only a handful of iconic pieces of clothing. You can count them on one had ” maybe two. Theres the Schott biker jacket, Levis jeans, Members Only windbreakers, Converse All Stars, and then ” drum roll, please ” the glorious T. Now, Im sure some of you fashionistas could expand my list ” more power to you. You could twist my arm and add Doc Martens, pea coats, and even the trusty wing tip, but my aim here is to make it very clear how much I love the simplest of garments, this under-vest, this T-shirt.

A T-shirt is a very specific thing. Dont let the big guys fool you (read as Hanes or FTL) into thinking anything thats not a button-down Oxford qualifies as a training shirt. It doesnt. A tank top is just that ” not a T-shirt! A long-sleeved T-shirt is not a T-shirt; its a knit shirt. Or something like that. There is no such thing as a short or long or collar T! Anything longer or shorter than the classic crew neck (I will give you the V neck) is something else.

By and large, a T-shirt is made out of cotton (sometimes polyester, sometimes both) that is knitted together with a jersey stitch, which gives this godly garment its distinct, unrivaled texture. Ah, the sweet relief of sliding on a fresh clean T ” you would be hard pressed to find such a singular sensation. I dare you! It is the ultimate in comfort, despite some formalists who decry the T as some kind of symbol of the degradation of the Western world. The fall of Rome, signified by the proliferation of the lowly T-shirt. Preposterous.

The T-shirt, my love, my life, also makes for what people in ad agencies call human billboards. Yes, the corporate grubs love to silkscreen their logos and slogans on finely knitted T-shirts, but lets not forget how the T can be the most powerful grass roots tool. All you need is a felt-tip pen (I suggest a Sharpie) and your Philosophy 101 book thats been collecting dust in the basement. Presto-bingo: instant slogan and social relevance. Hopefully. Cool T-shirts are whim away. Go get whimsical, and dont forget your training shirt!

Tamatori hime tattoos are Japanese designs that have become famous world wide. The name refers to an ancient Japanese legend involving Tamatori hime stealing from the dragon owning king of the underwater world. Hime stole the kings most prized possession ,a precious bead and then attempted to make her escape.

The imagery of the brave princess nearly giving her life rescuing the sacred bead is one,the dragon chasing and fighting her is another. These images can be combined or the two main characters can and often are shown as two separate entities.

Many will have the tattoo mainly or totally on the back as its the largest area that can be tattooed on. The tattoo often starts on the lower back and then can be spread over the back area. The dragon ,if included, can cover the whole of the tattoo or can be a main focus point.

It can also be a small and basic drawing or can be very detailed showing bone structure or flesh and scales. The detail depends on the wearers wishes and the abilities of the tattooist. Of course a basic design can be made more complicated if wished with more detail and more background added over a period of time.

They see the sacrifice she was willing to commit for the sake of the greater good, namely rescuing the bead and decide to make her immortal, princess hime. She then became the god for all the pearl divers and of course the focus for the Tamatori hime tattoos.

Similarly the princess Tamatori can vary in how she looks and how she is portrayed. She can be shown not moving and as a simple image or perhaps shown in action swimming or fighting. She could be worn to show courage and bravery, she could be worn to show empathy with her plight or simply to show agreement with her wisdom and subsequent saving by the gods.

With the princess comes the dragons and various other sea creatures beside. The wearer if using some of these aspects can show more of the story and can have more designs of nature, bravery and of a gallant fight between the human world and the mythical under sea world. The Japanese are famous for having intricate designs of tattoos that tell stories and have many recognisable features.

The wearer then has the chance to say much about themselves with these designs, taking aspects from the Tamatori hime tattoo theme and those of others beside. Taking aspects like wisdom and sacrifice from this legend and then blending it with other stories to say what the wearer wants to say about themselves.

As with all tattoos get plenty of research done in order to get the right design and very importantly the right tattooist to do the work. Sort out the design of the Tamatori hime tattoo design beforehand using magazines and on line, get it on paper and the get the work done. These designs look great as lower back tattoos and can often be seen in big cities.

People speak of “good feng shui” and “bad feng shui” depending on the way the energies are respected and put to work for you.

Feng Shui is based on the complete understanding of nature and the taoist vision, both accepting the notion that all things are full of the life energy or light, called “chi” or “qui” ( in Chinese ) or “ki” ( in Japanese ). The basic factors that could influence a feng shui analysis of a location, subject or situation including the five elements and the yin and yang rule. Feng shui is created on the ancient symbols present in I Ching, the ancient Chinese deity. These symbols are used in the octagonal grid, the Ba - Gua, that assist you in the possession or determination of the various relations between the feng shui locations in the home or office and the numerous parts of your life.

Feng shui is common to several different schools, and it involves several levels of learning and tolerant, based on the sopgistication of the information you have access to and actually get to internalize. The cures offered by feng shui for life improvement vary from the use of fountains, aquariums and crystals to the energy improvement through the use of clocks, colors and mirrors. Light and colors make an important mixture by the power they can bring to a certain location. Indeed places characterized by “bad feng shui” suffer from lack of light and color.

The interaction of the universal elements is another essential aspect of feng shui; wood, fire, water, earth and metal are capable of creating innovative or destructive circles depending on the preponderance they posses in one’s space. Each of the elements has a corresponding color; it is basic feng shui knowledge to know how to complement colors and balance an environment. The location of the elements in a space is not randomly done as it has to be determined by the octagonal grid, the Ba - Gua.
