Depression is no doubt considered a disease. It’s a mental disease, but a disease nonetheless. It strikes a critical organ, the brain. Depression doesn’t make a person a lesser person. It does not place you in a category that is stereotyped as weird or nuts. Just like other illnesses it can be treated.

Early depression is hard to detect. Sadness is part of life. People can become sad for a variety of reasons. This alone does not constitute depression. Depression isn’t short term. Depression is long term. If the depressed mood seems to linger week after week and begins to affect your daily life than that is a sure sign of depression . Radical mood swings are a sure sign of depression. Bad eating and inability to sleep are also signals.

Medical depression has complex causes. It leaves open many possibilities and factors that must be taken into consideration. Stress is certainly one of the major causes of depression. There is so much stress in our lives today. Stress is part of personal interaction. Stress comes from balancing the books. Raising children is stressful and so can result in medical depression. Some forms of medical depression come on after losing a loved one. Chemical, environmental and even genetic issues further complicate the situation.

The positive result is that there are cures for medical depression. 17 million people nation wide are affected with medical depression yearly. 2/3 of those will never seek medical attention. It is hard to get a cure if you don’t get diagnosed. There are medications both natural and prescribed on the market today. Medical professionals can also assist the cure by offering ‘talk therapy′. This is a means of talking out the problem with you.. There are also many different support groups that allow you to associate with those who suffer and feel the same as you do. You do not have to get through medical depression alone. Such a disease isn’t self healing. Medical professionals should be consulted if you or someone you know shows symptoms of medical depression.

Let there be no doubt that depression is a serious mental illness that requires months and sometimes years of treatment on the path to a cure. Millions of Americans across the United States are affected by depression each and every year. The situation becomes worse because only one third of those who suffer depression ever get treated.

Depression has always been classified as a mental affliction. Therefore, many Americans choose not to be placed into that category. Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves. Unlike a headache depression doesn’t eventually stop on its own, and more people suffer from depression than you might think.

What are the causes for depression? The answer can get very complicated because you have to take many factors into consideration. There are so many things factored into the cause of this disease. Here are a few of the parts of depression. Many medical professionals believe that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. But what causes the imbalance?

Typically the causes stem from biological, genetic, physical, mental and environmental implications. There are those inflicted that never really determine what spurned their depression. Depression often follows diagnosis of other medical conditions, particularly those that result in imminent death or are chronic.

Depression can also stem from the emotional pain when a close person dies. Everyone knows such losses are serious. Long periods of emotional, sexual or other physical abuses can result in depression. When people abuse drugs and/or alcohol the result is often depression. People’s mental states are fragile. If exposed to the wrong pressures, depression can result. There can also be a genetic element to depression. A strong correlation between family history of depression and current depression has been found. Many prescription drugs can cause depression. It has been clinically proven that some high blood pressure medication can cause depression.

A major cause of depression is stress. In our lives many events and elements can cause stress. Some of that stress can even be related to positive events in our lives such as promotions, graduation or moving into a new house. In these cases it’s not the good event causing stress, but fear of the unknown and/or fear of ability to deserve or maintain the positive element. In addition, many are stressed from personal conflicts with their loved ones, associates in employment or friends. Some people have a low threshold for stress. They’re affected by events and activities that to others seem to not be stressful.

Doctors first look for cause when seeking a treatment for depression. If you or someone you love suffers from depression-please seek medical assistance.

In todays society, millions of people are being prescribed anti depressant drugs by their medical doctors. They arent even seeing a therapist or psychiatrist, and they receive no talk therapy. Too often this is a prescription for life long drug dependence. This may be completely unnecessary.

Do you need drugs to get help for depression? That is a question most of us face when we are diagnosed. Since drugs equals side effects, we want to be careful.

There isn′t an easy yes or no answer to the question of needing antidepressants, because there are different varieties and degrees of depression. Some few types of depression may only respond well to drugs. So it is always good to check with a mental health professional.

And, for most common forms of depression, you may not need anti depressant drugs. Or, if you do, you dont need to take drugs for longer than a few months. The first rule of thumb is generally to see a doctor and talk frankly about your symptoms. If your doctor prescribes anti depressants, make sure to ask how long you should expect to need them. If you get an answer of longer than six months, get a second opinion.

If you are taking antidepressants and want to get off of them, one thing you can do is to make sure you are getting talk therapy along with the drugs. Most depression symptoms are significantly reduced by simple talk therapy.

Antidepressants can have serious side effects, like weight gain, problems with sleep, and depressed sex drive. Because of these, you definitely want to avoid lifelong dependence on them if you can.

If you want to avoid or get off drugs, you can start by learning to heal depression naturally, which can include some simple talk therapy. Most depressive episodes can be worked through within a few months, so that you start feeling better about yourself.

There are some natural approaches to healing most kinds of depression from home, without drugs or psychotherapy that involve nutritional support and self talk techniques.

You have to understand depression before you can treat it. Depression troubles 15 million Americans every year, it’s not a joke. The most difficult part of it is that about 2/3 of those people won’t seek treatment.

It’s the stereotypes associated with mental illness that plague far too many people. Their character is so important that they don’t want a label like crazy to tarnish it. In order to treat depression it must be diagnosed. To be diagnosed, those that suffer have to seek assistance. It’s a vicious circle.

Many factors lead to depression. Depression stems from chemical, emotional, environmental and even physical causes. Don’t overlook the genetic link. Family history plays a major role in many diseases that are passed on down the line. It is not just family history but family life in general.

The stress of everyday life can be brutal. For some there is a constant struggle to survive from week to week. For others there is that constant battle to perform satisfactory in a competitive society. Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair. It’s a long list.

In the early stages depression is often hard to diagnose. It’s hard to see the symptoms even if a loved one suffers from this illness. Everyone gets down in the dumps once in a while. This is natural. Depression is more than just temporary sadness. When the symptoms begin to start taking over your life than the opportunity for early detection has been missed. Those suffering from depression tend to feel all alone and disgusted with life. They no longer recognize any hope for their life. Simple daily enjoyments and even sleeping are affected. This is when treatment is critical.

Depression treatment involves giving people back their hope and positive outlook on life. This is typically achieved through ‘talk therapy’. This is a long term treatment that won’t have immediate results, but it works. Anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox can also help. These drugs are effective but they are accompanied by many side effects as well. Studies also show that some herbs can be effective as depression treatment.

Depression support groups also exist. If you or someone you love are feeling the affects of depression please consult a medical professional immediately.

Depression is a medical mental illness that affects more than 17 million Americans each year. There are many various forms of depression. It typically begins as mild depression and ends up, barring any treatment as major depression. When it becomes major depression then suicide is a real concern. But a major problem is that people don’t face their depression. They avoid visiting doctors because they don’t want to be categorized as nuts. The risk is, they think, a label of not normal.

This isn’t the case. It is considered today that depression is a mental illness that’s real. However, it is just a disease like any other. No matter how it seems that depression is impossible, cures exist. Those afflicted by this disease have treatment choices. If you don’t look for treatment, you can’t be cured.

Once the symptoms are known, it’s time to solve the problem. This illness won’t just disappear one day. Treatment is needed. Depression is known to be caused by a variety of factors. We know that stress; biological, genetic, emotional and environmental issues are consistent with the depression disorder.

There are many types of treatment for depression. Prescribed treatments, such as anti-depressant medications, work well. There are also natural herbs that can be taken that have been proven to help control the effects of depression. Medical professionals can also treat the illness with talk therapy. A popular solution for depression is the depression support group often portrayed on television or in the movies. Depression support therapy with a group allows people to talk through their issues with others. Patients with similar issues help each other through the problems.

It’s now becoming more common to participate in a depression support group. The draw- backs are that some are very shy about their affliction. They do not wish to face others with their problem. The opportunity, however, for a lot of people is a great chance to release hidden away emotions by talking about them in a group setting. When you hear other individuals opening up with many of the same feelings that you face each and every day you tend to open up yourself.

No depression sufferer is alone in this. If you or someone you love is suffering from depression please consider a depression support group as a method of assisting you with your illness.
