Depression must first be understood before it’s treated. Depression troubles 15 million Americans every year, it’s not a joke. The most difficult part of it is that about 2/3 of those people won’t seek treatment. It’s the stereotypes associated with mental illness that plague far too many people. They refuse to allow a label placed on them that might damage their good character. Depression has to be diagnosed before it can be treated. Diagnosis doesn’t happen while the sufferer hides the problem. That’s the terrible merry go round of depression.

Depression has many causes. Biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors can result in depression. The genetic link cannot be ignored as well. Family history plays a major role in many diseases that are passed on down the line. It’s not just family history but also family dynamics. Living comes along with a lot of stress. Some undergo a daily fight just to make ends meet. For others there is that constant battle to perform satisfactory in a competitive society. Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair. The list goes on and on.

Depression is often hard to find in its early form. Someone you love may be suffering from this illness and you would find it hard to see obvious symptoms. Everyone gets down in the dumps once in a while. This is natural. The affects of depression go much deeper.

Early detection is no longer an option when your whole life begins changing. People with depression feel lonely and fed up with general living. They no longer see a sign of hope in their lives. Simple daily enjoyments and even sleeping are affected. At this point treatment has become literally a matter of life and death.

In treating depression you have to reinstall hope and purpose into those that are suffering. This stage of treatment comes through talking. This treatment can take months or years to bring about positive results but it is effective. The medical professional also has the option of prescribing anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox. These drugs are effective but they are accompanied by many side effects as well.

There are also natural herbs that have been proven clinically to bring about positive results in treating depression as well. Depression support groups also exist. If you or someone you love are feeling the affects of depression please consult a medical professional immediately.

Help With Depression - Getting Out of the Box

One of the first obvious things to discuss around depression is unpleasant feelings. Difficult emotions. And if you look, its easy to find that we all operate from a box around our emotions. A very simple, obvious box.

We all have emotions we like feeling. A normal list are things like Love

pleasure

joy

Enthusiasm

exhilaration

Inspiration

Enthusiasm

These types of emotions we call “good feelings.” We want to feel them as much as we can. Just so, there are many emotions we don′t want to have or feel at all. See if some of these negative feelings would be on your list:

Sadness

Anger

anger

hate

loneliness

Anxiety

Hopelessness

Emptiness

These feelings we call “bad emotions” and we try to avoid or stay away from them as much as we can. If we must feel them, we try to get away from them as fast as we can.

So what is this simple box we operate from around emotions? The box is that there are good emotions and bad emotions. Pretty obvious, right? We all seem to just know that when it comes to emotions there are good ones and bad ones, and the game in life is to feel good and not feel bad. This is so obvious that it goes unexamined. Of course this is the way you deal with emotions!

Therefore, all the feelings that go with the condition of depression we classify as “bad” emotions, to be gotten rid of as quickly as we possibly can. Thus the box we′re stuck in around depression is that depression is “bad.” And we believe we should avoid or resist all the emotions that go with depression.

But there is an underlying problem to this approach of trying to avoid or get rid of all the feelings that go with depression. It is founded in an “emotional mistake″ we make every day. This mistake is about not trying to feel bad emotions.

So try on the concept that you have an emotional “body,” and that it has a job to do. The job of your emotional body is to feel all feelings. Good ones like inspiration and enthusiasm, and bad ones like sadness and anxiety. It’s job is to feel ALL feelings, whether you like some or not. You can′t stop your emotional body from feeling your feelings, that’s what it does.

You cant keep your skin from feeling hot or cold, soft or hard. Your skin will feel whatever surrounds it. Just so, your emotional body will feel all of your emotions. You cant just feel good feelings. When you try to suppress bad feelings, you only cause them to get stuck. They then tend to stick around much longer. Trying not to feel the difficult emotions that go with depression can be a way to keep depression around!

So for help with depression, you need to get outside the box of resisting and avoiding all difficult emotions. One approach to doing this is to learn some basic emotional intelligence so that you can process difficult feelings more efficiently and quickly so that they don′t get “stuck.” No room here for all the details, but just 5 minutes a day of exploring a difficult emotion rather than resisting it can provide surprising depression help.

Depression isn’t simple. Depression can linger and grow for months or even years before being detected . It’s known that some 15 million people in America will be impacted by some type of depression each year. Unfortunately fewer than 1/3 of these people will look for help.

Those with the disease don’t even know it in many cases. Life is full of stress on a daily basis. The road blocks in life have become more severe. Many families are surviving week to week. The recent economic crises has created even more pressure to obtain and hold a job. Stress can give birth to depression.

Countless types of depression exist. Many of the labels are similar in meaning. These include medical depression, clinical depression and manic depression. Late stages of the disease are called severe depression.

Depression is brought on by many associating factors. There are those that believe it is biological, that chemical imbalances in the brain lead us to depression. Depression is also passed along in the genes. Those with family histories of depression are at risk.

Different types of depression are given birth by other similar factors. Depression is often the result of substance abuse. Alcohol or drugs both show links to depression. The death of a family member can increase the chance for depression.

Mental depression has taken a bad rap down through history. Before being classified as a disease it was thought to be a defect in character. The end result was treatment that was not appropriate or effective. Negative effects persist through all the stages of depression. Therefore treatment requires early detection.

When it has become severe depression treatment is needed ASAP. At this stage suicide is often the result. The calls for assistance weren’t answered and now the chance to solve the problem is fading. Treatment is typically ‘talk therapy′ and anti-depressants. Also available are support groups that can help. Natural herbs have also been found to work.

There are options available to those who suffer from all types of depression. If you or someone you love are experiencing symptoms of lingering depression please consult a medical professional for diagnosis and treatment.

You can successfully treat many forms of depression without using antidepressant drugs. If you want to avoid taking drugs to heal depression, or if you are already taking anti deressant drugs but would like to stop, there are ways (check with your doctor first) you can remedy depression without them.

How can you do this? Well, it is a bit more complex than a short article can handle, but there are three areas that you can explore, all of which can provide depression help.

The first method is to get talk therapy. We all know about it. Talk therapy has come a long way since lying back on the couch, and has a good success rate providing depression help. This comes from the fact that most types of depression are emotionally caused, not physically caused. Talking about your feelings is a powerful method to heal yourself more naturally and work through the emotional causes.

A second method for treating depression is through diet and supplementation. Some people respond well to simply removing refined white sugar from their diet and adding a few supplements like L Glutamine (an amino acid) and lecithin, among others. We all know if you eat junk food, you start to feel junky. Well, the common Western diet is full of junk processed foods that rob our bodies and minds of needed nutrition.

A third way has to do with emotional body work. Just as we have a physical body and a mental body, you can imagine that we also have an emotional body. All three of these bodies need exercise and good nutrition.

So just as we need to exercise our physical body with walking or dancing, we need to exercise our emotional body.

“Emotional body work” isn′t hard to learn, and you can gain great benefit in just a few minutes a day. This involves simple exercises to work with our whole range of emotions and feelings more effectively. Doing this can strengthen your emotional body and at the same time fortify it against depression.

So if you want to treat depression naturally, feel great about yourself, and avoid drug side effects and dependency, you can learn more about any one or all three of these methods. You can feel better and avoid drugs.
