Beyond The Hype - Leigh Steinberg Is A Quality Human Being
Ive been following the 2009 Super Bowl progress for the last few weeks. In doing so, I read tons of player and team stats, articles on coaches and their philosophies and many other topical NFL discussions. While reading these articles on the net, I came across one blog, SportsAgentBlog.com where the writer interview Leigh Steinberg.
Leigh Steinberg was very well known for having been inspirational in the movie Jerry Maguire, starring Tom Cruise. He was the sports agent who represented some of the greatest names in NFL football history, like Joe Montana, Steve Young and Warren Moon.
After reading this blog, I have to say I really admire Leigh Steinberg for the many things that he has done to inspire athletes, encourage an industry, i.e. sports agencies, to be become more of a community of colleagues, and generally advance the safety of these athletes.
I was really impressed to learn how Mr. Steinberg is a caring individual, not just for the athletes that he represents but also in the way that he believes that athletes should represent themselves. He stresses the importance of the athlete in giving back by coming role models, especially since sports is such a revered activity here in America.
After reading the blog, I began to understand that Leigh Steinberg is a man of integrity. He also talked about his belief in ensuring the future for generations to come relative to global warming and caring for our planet. He also practiced what he preached, by working with companies to encourage “green” within the sport.
I always felt that athletes, especially the big name stars only cared about fame and fortune. In fact, that is one of the reasons I stopped watching for while. There are so many high profile athletes that you see in the news negotiable multiple, multiple million dollar contracts that it almost gives the wrong impression.
After reading the interview, I really felt that Mr. Steinberg is trying to make a difference in this industry of football and sports, in general. Money is one thing, but leaving a positive impact on society seems to be ones driving Leigh. In that regard, he’s also spearheading an effort to not just study but recommend methods to reduce the impact of concussions on athletes, similar to what confounded Steve Young in the 80s.
I also read with fascination the comments that Leigh Steinberg made regarding athletes and their propensity for voting democrat or republican. It never dawned on me to think about an athlete in that manner. And, why the majority of them choose one party over the other. But, it certainly makes sense, based on the Mr. Steinberg’s description.
This blog made me really understand Leigh Steinberg’s character. He’s a very caring and “loving” person in the sense that he wants his athletes to not only succeeed, but live a long, healthy life, as well as give back to society. He’s donated a great deal of money to charities and causes.
If you ever watched the movie, Jerry Maguire, you will want to read this blog. It truly humanizes Leigh Steinberg and puts into perspective how one man can really make an impact on our society.
