Fish oil is the best source of omega 3 fatty acids and research has proven that this can make us healthy for a lifetime.

What do we get from fish oil?

It can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life. It is also said to be good for the development of the brain. There are claims that it can help people get higher scores in IQ tests too. It is also said to reduce depression tendencies and gives fewer headaches. People experiencing arthritis should also try this as it can reduce arthritis pain. It is good for the heart and is a good protection against prostate and breast cancer. It can also help those with diabetes. It basically has a lot of health benefits.

Omega 3 fatty acid plays a very important role in our lives, starting from the time of conception. It helps both men and women to produce healthy sperm and egg cells respectively. It gives them sufficient amounts of EPA and DHA, which are very essential for a successful pregnancy.

As early as the time of pregnancy, a baby’s brain needs omega 3 fatty acids for its proper development. Fish intake can also help in the development of the brain as it has been known to be a food for the brain. According to scientists, a baby’s brain is made up of 70% long chain omega 3 fatty acids like DHA, and around more than 60% can be found in an adults brain as well.

At least 1200 mg of pure omega 3 fish oil that contains balanced ratios of EPA and DHA are recommended by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a supplement to the diet of pregnant and nursing mothers.

At least 1000 mg of pure omega 3 fish oil is also recommended as a daily supplement by the NIH to other adults. For what reason? Just view these results.

Scientific tests showed that the EPA and DHA in fish oil effectively prevent inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, ulcerative colitis, cystitis and other painful inflammatory disorders.

Although fish oil does not necessarily cure the said diseases, it does give safe and natural relief to the said health problems without side effects.

According to researchers, EPA and DHA helps in regulating blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels. It can help prevent heart diseases naturally. It also helps minimize irregular heartbeats and blood clots which is the number one cause of stroke and can lead to a possible cardiac arrest.

Finally, patients who are terminally ill with cancer can have a higher survival rate and better quality of life when using omega 3 fish oil supplement in their diet. Researchers have also reported that it can reduce effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

You probably know by know that supplementing your diet regularly with omega 3 fatty acids has a lot of benefits. It can also be noted that supplementing fish oil to our diet makes sense since the absence of omega 3 fatty acids can cause problems like depression, pre-menstrual syndrome, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, violence and suicide.

The results of a recent survey has been really devastating as it shows a huge number of around 85% of Americans as having fatty acids deficiency and 98% of pregnant and lactating women getting only less than 18% of the recommended amount by the NIH.

But there is one more shocking revelation; around 20% of the population of America has very low DHA and EPA, which are the two omega 3 fatty acids. Test results would reveal no traces of DHA and EPA in their blood.

You now have the chance not to have this deficiency. You can start eating fatty fish like herring, tuna, salmon, sardines, and anchovies. It would also be good to take in high quality and pure fish oil as a daily dietary supplement.

With the many treatment options that are currently on the market, it can be difficult to select the one that is best. Being knowledgeable about various treatment options is critical in selecting a proper treatment plan. Some modern treatments include therapy and pharmaceutical drugs, as well as care giving.

Temporary treatment options for the symptoms of mild Alzheimer’s include such medications as Razadyne and Aricept. The US Food and Drug Administration approves of these drugs in order to hide the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease for up to 12 months; however, these drugs quickly lose their effects are this time period.

Antipsychotic medications can also treat the anger and aggression that can result from the breakdown of neurons. Typically, people will hold back on primitive human emotions that are not acceptable in public; however, as Alzheimer’s progresses these individuals lose their ability to control their impulses. Antipsychotic drugs can aid in proper social function and normal behavior.

Therapy can be helpful for Alzheimer’s patients, as it will teach them to identify problem behaviors and show them how to control their actions, resulting in improved social function. Therapy is widely criticized as not being effective, and tests are still ongoing to decide whether group or individual therapy can have a positive effect in treating Alzheimer’s disease.

More forms of therapy include showing persons with Alzheimer’s disease familiar photographs or playing music, which can aid in improving memory and concentration.

Therapy using such elements as tape recordings or the voices of loved ones and testing memory recall is typically conducive of a soothing feeling in those with Alzheimer’s, as they gain a sense of security from the familiar settings.

As Alzheimer’s worsens, a person will lose more and more social function and become dependent upon others. Typically, a caregiver is required as the disease enters the moderate to severe stage, as those with Alzheimer’s may take a scalding hot shower or drive to a place and forget where they are or how they got there. If there is no one willing to take care of the sufferer of Alzheimer’s disease, then a nursing home can be used, which can provide twenty-four hour care.

Due to the wide variety of treatments on the market, staying on top of the latest developments is important in selecting the options right for you, as well as your loved ones. Care giving, pharmaceutical drugs, and therapy are all viable options in managing this disorder.

How a Body Fat Monitor Works

If you are like me, you may have noticed that you look fine in the mirror or the number on your scale hasn’t gone up too much in the past few weeks. But why can’t the pant size I wore a month ago fit the same way it did then? Have the stores changed their sizing policies? This invariably leads to frustration and embarrassment.

Obesity is now identified as a serious health problem, and not only among children. In fact, it’s the fastest growing symptom among senior executives who spend most of their time at desks with little physical activity. Unless you’re a child or a senior executive, how do we know whether we are sitting above or below the “danger” level?

Sure, a scale can tell you how much you weigh and by diarizing your weight over a period of time you can create a pretty trend line. But weight has little to do with your body fat measurement. In some cases, you can look okay in the mirror and your weight might not increase much (or at all) but your health could still be just as much at risk as someone with a serious weight problem. See, when they said it was what is on the inside that counts, they weren’t kidding. Body fat, which resides under the surface, is really what threatens your health and increases your prospect for weight-related health problems.

The way to properly measure body fat is with a body fat monitor. This device can tell us what we need to know.

In the past, you might have had to see a doctor or fitness specialist to properly calculate your body fat content. Over the past twenty-eight years or so, these machines have evolved to the point where they can capture biometric impedance. As high-tech as it sounds, today’s body fat monitors are actually simple to use.

The way the monitor works is that it sends an electrical signal through your body and measures the resistance faced by the signal. For example, a signal will pass quicker through body water than through body fat. People with high fat and muscle composition, then, would have high body water contents. The monitor measures total body water (TBW) and then figures out fat-free mass of the body. Next it will estimate your body fat by calculating the difference and taking body weight into account.

With so many monitors on the market today, how do you choose a body fat monitor? With prices ranging from under forty dollars to over seven hundred, the choices are plenty. Luckily, they are all easy to use for the most part, allowing even children to use their basic features.

The basic features you should consider are whether your body fat monitor can make simple calculations like daily caloric intake and perform basic weight monitoring calculations. You should also look for a model that comes with the option of changing settings (e.g. from child to adult, from athletic to moderately athletic to non-athletic, and so on). While seemingly unimportant when you get started, these features can make a difference in how well the monitor performs over a longer period of time, particularly as your habits shift (our activity levels tend to change over time). As well, the more accurate a reading is, the more it will help you remain focused with your longer-term fitness objectives.

Another vital feature with some monitors is longer term monitoring and storage. You will want to pick a body fat monitor that can save multiple readings. This way, parents and children can share a single unit without the need for manual trending and recording.

What a body fat monitor will not do is help us lose weight just by keeping track of our readings. But by measuring our readings regularly, we may be able to stay on track with our workouts and find satisfaction as the underlying numbers support that we are indeed shaping a better, healthier body. And with that, hopefully, we can eliminate those last-minute frustrating moments of squeezing into a pair of pants that really should fit properly.

Overview of Ovarian Cysts During Pregnancy

Quite common among all women, ovarian cysts usually take the shape of a small, round sac filled with fluid. Women even get ovarian cysts during pregnancy which happens in approximately one out of every thousand pregnancies.

The great majority of ovarian cysts discovered during pregnancy are benign cysts. Malignant cysts during pregnancy are less common. Ovarian cysts are classified as benign or malignant by doctors using ultrasound machines. If the mass lacks thick walls with no evidence of septation and is filled with fluid, it is probably a benign cyst. However, ultrasound is not one hundred percent accurate.

Ovarian cysts, even those that are benign, will grow large. This in turn can create complications during pregnancy. Though large cysts cause pain to both pregnant and non-pregnant women, a rupture of a large ovarian cyst during pregnancy can cause a risk of a miscarriage or premature labor. Pre-term delivery may occur due to complications brought about by an ovarian cyst during pregnancy.

Rarely will ovarian cysts during pregnancy cause any real problems. In some cases when they do become large enough to rupture, the thing doctors are concerned with the most is the pain they produce. Your doctor would be able to suggest over the counter pain relief that would not have any effect on the baby. Even during the pressures of labor the use of anesthesia can keep the level of discomfort down so the ovarian cysts are not a cause for concern.

The only time when a ovarian cyst generally requires surgery is when it it becomes twisted. The surgery to correct the problem will usually not cause any pregnancy complications. But with every surgery there are going to be risks that should be avoided at all costs if possible. Generally, removal will only be preformed if the cyst grows any larger then 6 CM in diameter.

When a woman is pregnant, it is best to operate on ovarian cysts during the second trimester at 14 to 16 weeks. Though some cysts are removed by laparoscopy, larger cysts can only be removed through an open incision. It is likely for large ovarian cysts to rupture. Therefore, women with large ovarian cysts should talk to their doctors about ovarian cysts during pregnancy. In many cases, doctors merely watch over their patients until the second trimester, in which they choose to operate with no complications.

All in all, ovarian cysts are certainly possible during pregnancy and although they should be monitored, ovarian cysts during pregnancy are usually just as harmless as they are when a woman is not pregnant.

There are many ways you can help your loved one get dressed. Start by throwing away any clothes in the closet or dresser that he or she won’t ever wear. This can eliminate a lot of confusion in choosing what to wear. So that your loved one can stay independent, don’t choose exactly what they will wear each day. Instead, lay out a few outfit choices and let them make the decision for themselves.

If you find that your loved one likes to wear the same outfit each day, buy two or three duplicates of each article so that they wear clean clothes instead of ones they’ve worn earlier in the week.

On top of being overwhelmed by choices, Alzheimer’s patients often forget how to get dressed or where each article of clothing should go. Give them one piece of clothing at a time with specific instructions as to what they should do with it to prevent confusion. Do not ask them to just “get dressed” because they might not know what this implies.

For example, hand them their pants and ask them to put them on, repeating the same procedure with the rest of their outfit. Make sure they have comfortable, non-slip shoes and replace buttons, zippers and snaps with Velcro, which can be a lot easier for your loved one to handle.

Other grooming tasks, like managing hair, shaving and brushing teeth, are often forgotten about by Alzheimer’s patients. On top of forgetting how to do these things, they may just forget that they need to do them at all.

To encourage daily grooming, buy your loved ones favorite products so the activities are more enjoyable for them. Spend time with your loved one and get ready together so you can show them first hand how to do things and they can watch and mimic your activity.

Nail clippers, razors and other dangerous grooming items should be replaced to prevent injury. Invest in safer options, like emery boards and electric shavers. Going out in to public can be frightening for an Alzheimer’s patient, so see if your hair dresser or barber makes house calls. This way your loved one can have their hair cut, colored or permed in the comfort of their own home. Hygiene and safety are important but so isn’t independence. Do whatever you can to ensure your loved one has dignity as well as pride in his or her appearance.
