Our minds are so important, and when something gets in the way of it functioning properly. Mental illness is technically a sickness in your mind. Often, when individuals are afflicted with mental illness, it can be devastating to them and their families.

Despite the fact that it is distressing, mental illness is in no way out of the common. In fact, the President’s New Freedom Commission has stated that the most ordinary disability is mental illness.

However, that does not mean that mental illness is always so serious that it is impossible for the individual to function. In fact, with proper medication and therapy individuals who suffer from mental illness are often very capable of leading healthy and productive lives.

There are many different types of mental illness out there, but there are a few that are definitely more common than others. Depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are three types of mental illness that have the most cases reported. However, there are other less known types of mental illness like amnesia, autism, hysteria, kleptomania, and panic attacks to name a few.

The most important idea about mental illness is to have it identified correctly and to seek treatment . Habitually therapy comprises counseling by a licensed doctor of psychiatry, and could be combined with a regiment of recommendation drugs. The vital thing to be aware is that there are greatly useful medically based treatments out there to treat mental illness.

Football Active Ankle Sports Braces

There are numerous studies that state if a previous ankle sprain is not cared for correctly 9 times out of 10 the same ankle will become reinjured. Ankles that have had previous injuries can be unstable and are always open to being re-sprained again and again. It is important that football players with these types of injuries wear ankle braces for football to help the ankle to stay in alignment during vigorous exercise. The braces help the body to keep the ankle in the right positions, doing something that a injured ankle may not be able to do. Some doctors or researchers speculate that when ankle injuries occur the nerves that tell your body what position your ankle is in are damaged. The proprioceptors (nerves in the ankles) have the ability to tell the body when the ankle has gone too far in the inappropriate direction. Thereby, telling the body to correct the position of the ankle immediately. It is more difficult for the body to know when inappropriate movement is occurring when these nerves have been damaged.

Ways to know that your may have proprioceptors damage

One of the ways to know that you may have propioceptors damage is Lack of balance. An easy test that your doctor can do is to administer a balance test. Your doctor will ask you to stand on one leg and count to 15. If during your 15 seconds you have to put your leg down because you cant keep balance then you may have the nerve damage.

How can a player reduce the risk of re-injury? The key is to being proactive. Playing on quality surfaces is one thing a player can do. For example, football players often play on artificial turf. I know, they have no control over the field. But they can voice their concern knowing that artificial turf can cause future ankle injuries. Artificial turf when friction between the players feet and the turf tend to hold onto players feet. When the feet are held the foot stays stationary while the player is still in motion in another direction, causing an ankle injury. Ankle braces cant solve the problem but can help to not have an injury.

Enteric Coated Fish Oil and Asthma

I′m still enjoying the Florida sunshine as I write because my trip back to Long Island was delayed. One of my large family, (of cats) had to have surgery, and he can’t travel until at least Wednesday. I′ll just sit here and suffer in the 70 degree weather.

A friend of mine coached girls basketball for many years, and we got to talking about “sports” or “exercised induced” asthma, when exercise causes acute narrowing of the airways, making it tough to breathe.

30 minutes of rest and an inhaler would work 99% of the time. And these were the tough girls. The vast majority of them, as well as boys these days, opt for zero sports period. Misinformed parents don’t help when they push their kids away from possibly hurting themselves which means no activity at all.

My friend’s team had a remarkable system for handling asthma. The affected girl would jump out of the game and her teammates would help with the inhaler while an assistant coach watched. Then the girl’s breathing would get back to normal and everything would be fine.

Then, after a rest, she would often resume play, as if it had never happened at all.

I′ve just seen a study showing that a low salt diet combined with pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplementation reduces the incidence of bronchoconstriction, or “sports” asthma.

In the study, done at the University of Indiana in 2006, the post-exercise lung function of participants, adults with mild to moderate persistant asthma, improved by about 64 per cent… and their use of emergency inhalers decreased by about 31 per cent, when they consumed a low salt diet, supplemented with pharmaceutical grade fish oil, for the period of the study.

One of the key findings in the study was that airway pro-inflammatory cells and markers, which are responsible for airway inflammation and subsequent airway obstruction, were reduced, while on the diet and fish oil supplementation.

Where do kids get all the salt, which is a key factor?

Cheetos, hot dogs, Doritos, frozen pizza, potato chips, and most microwavable food. All loaded with salt.

If you′re around kids much, then you already know they put this stuff away by the quart.

My advice…get rid of it. Start buying less of it, and start introducing the kids to good food. Everybody benefits.

And don’t just get enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil for yourself. Get it for the whole family. It’s never too early to start everyone on the road to healthy living, and nobody is going to get a strong, healthy body by eating Fritos.

Good exercise and good food, plus enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil, mean your odds of suffering from this kind of asthma may be very slim.

The Steelers and Their Secret Weapon?

I’m off for another trip to Long Island, where I’ll be settling for a while. Hopefully the sunshine will be settling there too since these bones don′t much like the cold anymore.

Today I found an interesting article published in the first issue of Sports Health: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach. It’s a medical publication that probably wouldn′t have much appeal for sports fans.

Just take a look at the title, which was “Evaluation of Lipid Profiles and the Use of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acid in Professional Football Players.” Most would find the box score of a Celtics game more fun, but I love this kind of stuff. So let my nerdish obsessions work in your favor.

To make the information more digestible, 36 Steelers were given pharmaceutical grade fish oil, and then given a VAP(R)Cholesterol Test. They were searching for emerging cardiovascular risk factors, and researching whether omega 3 EFAs (essential fatty acids), the kind found in pharmaceutical grade fish oil, can reduce these factors.

During the period of the study each participant in the treatment group was given 2560 mg per day of mixed EPA/DHA omega 3 fatty acid supplements.

According to Dr. James Erlich, the Chief Medical Officer of Atherotech, a partner in the study, professional football players are statistically at higher than normal risk for future cardiovascular disease and sudden heart attack.

Watching games these days, it’s pretty easy to see why. These guys are gigantic. 280 is considered “light” for a lineman and 300 pounds is now commonplace. This weight will catch up to them sooner or later. Usually sooner.

The VAP Tests determined that pharmaceutical grade fish oil improved good cholesterol in Steeler players, and lowered damaging particles and triglycerides. Elevated levels of triglycerides (ie., animal fats) are associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Taking the pharmaceutical grade fish oil may not have helped much when they played against the Cardinals, but it will help them after the game’s over, for the rest of their lives. These guys are tough, big, strong, and kind of crazy. After all, they play professional sports.

And the fact is, many of them die much too young, often from heart attack and stroke. Giving these Sunday warriors pharmaceutical grade fish oil is a big step in the right direction.

And pharmaceutical grade fish oil isn′t just for 300 pounders, or professional athletes. It will help virtually everyone who chooses to take it, from assisting in the flushing of your arteries, to stopping migraines, to helping quell joint pain.

If you want to extend your reservation at this grand hotel, get some now, and keep taking it.
